The 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time

This week we celebrate the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes in today’s Gospel speaks of feeding the “five thousand men, not counting women and children.”  The people interrupted Jesus’ attempt at a retreat.  “His heart was moved with pity for them and he cured their sick.” The people were not just being fed physically.  They were being spiritually fed by Jesus, who, through his actions was instilling the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in the disciples.  How many times in our lives are we restless, unsure, experiencing a sense of emptiness yet cannot let it go?  Perhaps it is a need for Jesus deeper in our lives that calls us to pray and to listen to the Spirit within us as we contemplate our lives or a special time in our lives.  God, the Holy Spirit is within and through us.  We are nourished by Scripture.   Take time to reflect on Psalm 145:  “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.”
